5 Things Schools Can Do Now to Get Ready for September

As the school year draws to a close, the last thing anyone needs is more pressure. But a little bit of forward planning now can make all the difference come September.
Here are five quick, practical things schools and early years settings can do before to help you start the new year feeling organised, supported, and ready for whatever comes your way.

1. Review your supply needs
Take stock of what worked (and didn’t) when it came to cover this year. Were there any pinch points? Any last-minute juggles that could be avoided with a bit of forward planning?

Even if your staffing situation changes over the summer, giving your supply partner a heads-up now means they’ll be better placed to support you when the new term begins.

2. Reconnect with your supply partner
Let your provider know about any changes to your usual contact, safeguarding leads or school start times — even small updates can help things run more smoothly in September.
At ESP, we keep school preferences on file, but a quick check-in now helps us hit the ground running with the right people in the right places.

3. Think about induction plans
If you’re welcoming new staff — including supply teachers or TAs — it’s worth reviewing what information they’ll receive on day one.

A clear handover, welcome pack or short school guide can go a long way in helping supply staff settle in and support your pupils effectively.

4. Prep for common absences
September can bring a wave of short-term absences — from illness to INSET training. Think about where you might need regular cover or who your go-to support staff are.
If there are known dates where you’ll need additional hands, you can pencil those in with your supply team early.

5. Make space for rest
Finally, don’t forget to rest. A calm and confident start to the new school year begins with a proper break. The more you can plan now, the easier it’ll be to switch off and come back refreshed.
