How to Protect Your Energy as a Supply Teacher

The winter can be one of the most demanding times of the school year, particularly for supply staff working across different schools.

The days are shorter, energy can feel lower, and routines are often at their busiest. For supply teachers and TAs, this can mean stepping into classrooms where everyone is working hard to keep things steady, often alongside winter illness, absences, and last-minute changes.

Supply staff play a vital role during this time. Quietly keeping classrooms running, offering consistency, and supporting children when it’s needed most.

At ESP, we know how much care and emotional energy supply work takes, especially during this term. Now is a good time to pause, check in, and think about how to protect your energy while staying connected to the work you love.

Why the winter can feel tougher for supply staff
As the term progresses, pressure often builds in schools. Expectations remain high, days feel full, and winter weather and illness can make even well-planned weeks less predictable.
Supply roles often involve arriving at short notice, quickly understanding a setting, and bringing calm into busy classrooms. This work is meaningful, but it can also make each day feel more demanding than usual.

Protecting your energy during the term on supply
Protecting your energy at this point in the year isn’t about stepping back from the work. It’s about making small, deliberate choices that help you to pace yourself through the rest of the term.

A few practical ways supply staff can do this:

Be selective where you can
You don’t have to accept every booking. If certain year groups, settings, or types of cover consistently feel more manageable for you, prioritising those can make a noticeable difference over time.

Lean into familiar schools
Returning to schools you know well usually requires less adjustment. Familiar routines, expectations, and working relationships reduce the effort needed just to get through the day.

Think about how your week is paced
Back-to-back busy days can be draining. Where possible, spacing work or maintaining some flexibility in your week can help prevent fatigue.

Pay attention to patterns, not just individual days
Some settings or roles will take more out of you than others. Noticing those patterns helps you make informed choices that support you through the rest of the term.

These aren’t big changes. They’re small adjustments that help make supply work manageable during a demanding time of the year.

Finding motivation in everyday classroom moments

During the winter, progress can feel slow. Big breakthroughs are less common, and days can blur together.

But motivation is often found in small moments:
  • a calm transition on a difficult day
  • a child feeling safe enough to ask for help
  • a class settling more quickly than expected
  • a moment of connection that changes the tone of the day

These are the signs that your presence is making a difference, even when it feels subtle.

You’re not on your own

Supply work can sometimes feel isolating, particularly during the winter. But you’re not doing this alone.

At ESP, we’re here to support you, not just with placements, but with flexibility, understanding, and conversation. If things feel heavy, it’s always ok to reach out.
That might mean:
  • adjusting your availability
  • requesting more familiar settings
  • talking through what’s working and what isn’t
  • or simply checking in

If you’d like to discuss your availability, adjust your working pattern, or check in about how supply work is feeling this term, we’re always here and always happy to help.
